1 PURPOSE

Kristallnacht caught the world’s attention—but only for a fleeting moment. On November 9–10, 1938, Jewish synagogues, businesses, schools, and cemeteries across Germany were defiled and destroyed. The world was shocked, then quickly returned to business as usual. Meanwhile, Jewish families mourned loved ones murdered in the streets, comforted victims of rape and assault, and anguished over the 30,000 Jewish men dragged off to concentration camps. Seven years and a world war later, justice finally came to the Nazi regime—but nothing could restore the millions of Jewish lives lost, the beginning of which erupted on Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

Not On My Watch

The rising tide of antisemitism in the 1930s caught both Christians and Jews off guard. Why, then, should we be surprised that the same hatred has resurged in the wake of the October 7, 2023 atrocities committed against Jews in Israel—driven by the very same spirit that animated the Nazis? This is not new. It is the same ancient hatred that has pursued the Jewish people for millennia, yet those unfamiliar with history or the Bible struggle to recognize it.

At Ten From the Nations, we are determined to change that. In 2023, we marked Kristallnacht with a commemoration called Not On My Watch. Our purpose was to shine light on the horrors of November 1938 and October 2023, to draw the connections between them, and to call Christians to action in solidarity with their Jewish brothers and sisters against antisemitism.

This year, our focus goes deeper.

Solidarity is no longer enough.

Crossing Over The Broken Glass

Our 2025 Kristallnacht commemoration is titled 'Crossing Over the Broken Glass.' It is an invitation to Christians to make the hard journey—across the shattered history of destruction—to stand alongside the Jewish people. To look into the broken glass and see our own reflection. To acknowledge the role we and the church universal have played in inflicting centuries of pain on the Jewish people. It is time to cast off the chains of antisemitism and step into a walk of peace and truth.

What is required now is something greater: that Christians and Jews join together as followers of the God of Abraham, transcending past divisions to move forward into the promised era of peace. As Isaiah foretold: “Many peoples shall come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths’” (Isaiah 2:3). This is the precursor to the Messianic age, when swords will be beaten into plowshares, spears into pruning hooks, and war will be no more.

Beyond The Broken Glass

This is the message Jews and Christians have been entrusted to bring to the world. Now is the time to rise together, share what we have learned, and overcome Jew-hatred by laboring side by side to build God’s kingdom.  This is a call to journey beyond the Broken Glass—into the next chapter of God’s redemption for Israel and the nations.
